Members of Barclays Bank branches in Birkenhead and Wallasey signed up as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to work alongside volunteers from the local community to create a new Fruit Routes community orchard.
They agreed to help plant a heritage apple orchard and fruit tree nursery at the Edward Kemp Community Gardens in Ashville Road Birkenhead, Wirral, United Kingdom.
The orchards will help people reconnect with nature and will leave a legacy which can be enjoyed by future generations. It is hoped the orchards will bring people together to experience food growing and to improve their quality of life now and in the future.
Over 200 apple trees were planted in one day by volunteers of all ages starting from just 3 years old. Fruit Routes also donated apple trees to local schools and projects which will allow disabled children and schools to grow fruit in their own orchard.
