Grafting Rootstock Training
The grafting rootstock training day started with the obligatory bacon sandwiches then Daniel the tutor, who had travelled quite a distance, demonstrated the theory and practice of grafting scions and rootstock.
The training day was over subscribed and everyone who attended had the opportunity to practice grafting under the watchful supervision of Daniel the tutor. Knives, scions, tape and rootstock were provided on the day and all grafted trees were later planted in the Lyndale orchard fruit tree nursery.
Delegates were then taught how to collect scions from fruit trees in order to propagate their own. They were also taught about different varieties of scion and different types of rootstock. Over 200 new apple trees were grafted on the day. Once they mature they will create school and community orchards or planted out to create edible fruit picking trails.
